Overcoming an injury

Over the past few years, I have faced significant setbacks due to knee injuries. Overcoming two knee surgeries while trying to stay competitive in athletics has been a challenging journey. Both surgeries were on my right knee, but recently, my left knee has started to cause problems. It all began when I noticed some swelling in my left knee, though at the time, I did not think much of it. However, the discomfort soon escalated, and I found myself unable to move in bed without severe pain. I had to keep my leg in one position just to avoid aggravating the pain.

Despite the increasing pain, I decided to participate in our shot put competition that same day. Although I managed to throw, my performance was far below my usual standards. The frustration of not being able to perform at my best, combined with the physical discomfort, made the situation worse. Over fall break, since I was home, I decided it would be a good opportunity to see a doctor. During the appointment, the doctor discovered that my knee was out of place, which explained why I was unable to straighten it. After he popped it back into place, I immediately noticed that I could bend my knee more easily. He advised me to take the week off to allow it to recover, and I followed his instructions.

Unfortunately, despite resting, I believe I reinjured it by stepping into a hole in the field during practice. By the time the discus competition took place on Friday, I was still not able to perform at my full potential. The following Monday, I returned to the doctor, who made several adjustments to my knee. He recommended that I sit out until Friday and wear a brace to prevent further injury.

Watching practice from the sidelines has been one of the most difficult parts of this process. As someone who is accustomed to competing and pushing my limits, being unable to participate has been mentally and emotionally challenging. However, I remain hopeful that after this period of rest and recovery, I will be able to return to practice and begin working toward full recovery. Following the doctor's advice and being patient with my healing process is difficult, but I am determined to come back stronger.

  1. Going through injury as an athlete is definitely a tough and frustrating process. That time off is important though as it is better to sit out now and miss a little amount of time rather than making it worse and sitting out longer. I know you will be back and better in no time!

  2. As a former athlete I can relate to being affected by injuries. They are never fun as it hurts physically and mentally as you have to just watch from the sidelines. I hope you can get back to being healthy and eventually throwing again!
